What is a NiceFoto Umbrella Light?

An Umbrella Light is an integrated LED continuous light from NiceFoto that combines the light source and the softbox in a single fixture. It departs from conventional fixture design by making the shade and the light one unit with a fast open-and-collapse mechanism, so setup and operation are simplified and it suits shoots that move between setups.

Key characteristics: a highly integrated design that removes most assembly steps; an extra-large emitting surface producing even, soft light for a cinematic soft-light look; control from the fixture body or over the Bluetooth app; and multiple power options to suit different production needs.

Is an Umbrella Light a flash?

No. An Umbrella Light is an LED continuous light for video and stills, not a flash.

Is an Umbrella Light a COB light, and how does it compare?

No — an Umbrella Light is not a COB point source. It is a surface source. The LEDs are evenly arrayed close to the reflective fabric, so light is output through diffuse reflection with high light utilisation and an even, soft transition across the whole face. A conventional COB point source is bright at the centre and falls off towards the edges, so its transition is less even than an Umbrella Light’s.

An Umbrella Light is also ready to use straight away, with no assembly: it removes the step of joining a softbox to a lamp head in conventional lighting. It opens and closes in a single action for fast setup, and the integrated design suits one-person operation and mobile shooting. A conventional COB point source needs a separate softbox or modifier fitted to it.

The trade-off: an Umbrella Light cannot take light-shaping accessories the way a conventional point source can.

What shapes and sizes do Umbrella Lights come in?

Umbrella Lights come in five shapes — octagonal, rectangular, parabolic, bar and lantern. Sizes run from 30 cm to 200 cm, and power ratings from 100 W to 600 W.

What does an Umbrella Light model number mean?

The model code carries the category, the size and the power. Take DF80-1000A as an example: DF is the Umbrella Light category, 80 is the umbrella diameter in centimetres, and 1000 represents 100 W.

What light color modes are available?

Umbrella Lights currently come in three light color modes: A bi-color, B single CCT (daylight), and C full color (RGB).

Can an Umbrella Light be used outdoors or powered by Type-C?

No Umbrella Light model can be charged over Type-C. The DL series can be used outdoors: it uses an AC/DC ballast that accepts AC 100–240 V or DC 14.8 V × 2 (V-mount battery) and outputs DC 54–58 V, so it can run away from mains power. The DF series uses an AC ballast that accepts AC 180–240 V (AC 220 V or AC 110 V on the Rectangular series) and outputs DC 160–200 V, so it is mains-only.

When choosing: the DL series is recommended for outdoor and mobile shooting, while the DF series is the more economical choice for fixed studio work and livestreaming rooms.

How do you open and fold an Umbrella Light?

To open: push the umbrella forward until you hear it click into place. To fold: press the release button, push the umbrella forward a little first, then let it retract slowly and gently.

How is an Umbrella Light cooled?

An Umbrella Light uses natural cooling, with no fan. The LED layout is optimised to spread heat efficiently, and the high-quality reflective fabric lets heat dissipate through the umbrella itself, which keeps the fixture at a stable working temperature. Because there is no fan, the fixture is silent in operation.

What Umbrella Light series does NiceFoto offer, and what is each one for?

According to the NiceFoto 2026 catalogue, the Umbrella Light range is divided into five series:

The Rectangular series is bi-color 2700–6500 K and produces large-area even soft light, suited to multi-person livestreams, product displays and full-set lighting.

What are the CRI and TLCI of an Umbrella Light, and how good is the light quality?

Across the whole NiceFoto Umbrella Light range, CRI is ≥96 and TLCI is ≥96, so color rendering is accurate and true to life.

Light quality comes from the surface-source design: the LEDs are evenly arrayed close to the reflective fabric and the light is output through diffuse reflection, so it is even and soft with natural transitions and none of the bright-centre-dark-edges problem of a point source. The fixture is silent in operation, which suits film, video and livestreaming work where image quality matters.

What control methods does an Umbrella Light support?

An Umbrella Light supports three control methods:

Control directly from the ballast panel, for quick adjustment of brightness and color temperature.

Wireless remote control with a range of up to 30 m, for adjusting output and color from a distance.

Bluetooth app control with the NiceFoto app, for fine parameter adjustment and switching scene light modes (FX). The Octagonal series does not support app control.

Note: the grid accessory is sold separately.

What scene light modes (FX) does an Umbrella Light have?

Bi-color Umbrella Lights have six built-in scene light modes. Full-color (RGB) Umbrella Lights have 18 built-in FX scene light modes that simulate a range of dynamic lighting effects. Full-color models also support H000–H360 hue adjustment and GM fine calibration from −1.0 to 1.0, for creative lighting, mood work and video effects.

What is the difference in power supply between the DL and DF series?

The DL series uses an AC/DC ballast that accepts AC 100–240 V or DC 14.8 V × 2 (V-mount battery) and outputs DC 54–58 V, so with a battery it can run away from mains power.

What are the power input specifications, and can it take a V-mount battery?

Power input varies by series:

DL series (Parabolic, Lantern, Rectangular, full color) — ballast input AC 100–240 V or DC 14.8 V × 2, supports V-mount battery power, outputs DC 54–58 V to the fixture.

DF series — ballast input AC 180–240 V (AC 220 V / AC 110 V on the Rectangular series), outputs DC 160–200 V.

DP / DP-R series (single CCT) — the fixture connects directly to AC 220 V or AC 110 V.

DS series — fixture input DC 72 V.

The DL series can run from an external 14.8 V V-mount battery for mains-free shooting, and an outdoor version is also in development.

How portable is an Umbrella Light, and what are the folded dimensions?

Umbrella Lights use a fast open-and-collapse design with no assembly — they are ready to use the moment they open.

Folded length by series: Parabolic 62–106 cm, Octagonal 48.5–72 cm, Rectangular 78.5–79.5 cm, Lantern about 100 cm.

Packaging size and weight: Parabolic DL120 19.5 × 18.5 × 94 cm at 5.3 kg; DF120 15 × 14 × 93.5 cm at 3.2 kg; Octagonal DP80 10 × 10 × 71 cm at 1.8 kg.

The integrated shade design, paired with a carry bag, suits one-person changeovers and mobile shooting.

What shooting scenarios is an Umbrella Light suited to?

An Umbrella Light is an LED continuous light with a wide range of applications:

Livestream selling and e-commerce streaming fill — large-area soft light, natural skin tones, flicker-free.

Portrait and wedding photography — a cinematic soft-light look with even shadow transitions.

Product and advertising photography — high color rendering reproduces true product colors.

Short-form video, micro-films and film crews — the Parabolic series for focused soft light, the Lantern series for ambient fill.

Interview programmes, conferences and events — fast multi-light setups.

Children and pets — a continuous source is safe and comfortable on the eyes, with no flash sync needed.

How do you choose the right Umbrella Light power and size?

Choose by shooting space and scenario:

60–80 cm / 100 W — the main choice for single-person livestreaming, portraits and product shooting.

90–120 cm / 150–300 W — multi-person livestreaming, film crews, and work needing large-area soft light.

Full-color (RGB) series — creative shooting that needs colored mood lighting and dynamic FX effects.

Outdoor and mobile shooting — choose the DL series, which accepts a V-mount battery.

In general, a larger size and higher power give a bigger emitting surface and more output, so choose by the size of your subject and your lighting distance.

What are the advantages of an Umbrella Light over a conventional softbox and COB light?

Compared with a conventional COB point source plus softbox, the core advantages of an Umbrella Light are:

An integrated shade and light design that removes the step of joining a lamp head to a softbox — it opens and shoots.

Fast setup and teardown with one-action open and close, suited to one-person operation and quick changeovers.

A surface source using diffuse reflection, giving even, soft light with natural transitions and no bright centre or dark edges.

An extra-large emitting surface for a cinematic soft-light look.

Multiple power options (AC/DC, V-mount battery) and multiple control methods (panel, remote, app).

Natural cooling and silent operation.

The trade-off: it cannot take light-shaping accessories such as a snoot the way a conventional point source can.
